The Bug Bash interview round

More and more companies are introducing bug bash rounds in their interviews. Instead of solving a puzzle on a blank editor, you work on a real codebase and fix bugs that already exist in it. This page explains how the round works and gives you free repositories to practice on.

How the round works

  1. 1

    Clone the repository

You are given access to an existing codebase, usually a small but realistic service, and asked to clone it and get it running locally.

  2. 2

    Understand the reported bugs

You get a list of bugs (often as issues or tickets) describing broken behaviour. Some are obvious, some are subtle, just like real production issues.

  3. 3

    Find and fix them

Navigate unfamiliar code, reproduce the issue, find the root cause and fix it. Interviewers watch how you debug, not just whether you finish.

Practice repositories

We have set up 2 repositories for you to practice bug bash: one in Java and one in Python. Clone the one in your preferred language, then head to the Issues tab of the repository to see the list of bugs and try to fix them.

These repositories are for practice only.

Please don't raise any pull requests for fixing or changing anything. Keep your fixes local so the bugs stay in place for everyone else who wants to practice.
