Google Interview Warmup is shut down. The free Grow with Google practice tool that used to live at grow.google/interview-warmup no longer runs. That URL now sends you to a generic interview-tips article. Google’s own Skills pages say they retired it during “spring cleaning.”

If you searched for Google Interview Warmup today, you are not lost. The tool was useful, it disappeared quietly, and a lot of old links, Reddit threads, and AI summaries still talk about it as if it is live.

This post is the short version of what happened, what the tool was actually good for, and how to get that same warmup without paying for a “copilot.”

Is Google Interview Warmup still available?

No.

The old product URL (grow.google/interview-warmup) redirects to Grow with Google’s How to prepare for an interview guide.
Google’s replacement advice in that guide is to practice with Gemini Live in the Gemini mobile app.
The last public captures of the live tool sit in early 2026. People started reporting dead links around March 2026.

There is no official clone on Google Skills. There is no “Interview Warmup 2.0” with the same five-question, no-login loop.

What was Google Interview Warmup?

Google Interview Warmup launched in June 2022 as part of Grow with Google. It was built first for Career Certificate students, then opened to anyone. It was free. You did not need an account.

The loop was simple:

Pick a field (data analytics, UX design, IT support, project management, e-commerce, or a general set).
Get a short set of interview questions — usually five.
Answer out loud (or type). The tool transcribed you in real time.
Get “insights”: job-related terms you used, talking points you hit (experience, skills, goals), most-used words, and some pacing / word-choice notes.

Google was explicit about the product philosophy: your answers were not graded. You could retry as many times as you wanted. The pitch was a judgment-free zone. The tagline was “Before you interview, get warmed up.”

That is the whole product. It was not a Google software-engineering interview simulator. It did not run LeetCode. It did not know the job you were applying to. It did not ask follow-ups. It did not tell you if the story was any good.

It made it easy to say the answer out loud and then read what you actually said.

That is why people still search for it.

Why did Google shut down Interview Warmup?

Google never published a real post-mortem. The public line was spring cleaning.

The practical read is consolidation. Interview Warmup was a single-purpose ML demo from 2022. By 2026 Google wanted people in Gemini, not a separate warmup microsite. The interview-tips article that replaced the tool points you at Gemini Live, Career Dreamer, and custom Gems. None of those is the old five-question page.

The shutdown was messy. For a while the marketing page still looked alive, and “Get Started” dumped you into a retire notice. Search snippets lagged. That is how a dead tool keeps a four-figure search volume.

What Google Interview Warmup did well (and what it never did)

Worth being honest, because most “alternatives” lists sell you a $20/month product that is a different job.

It did well

Zero setup. Open, pick a track, talk.
Out-loud reps. Most people only practice in their head. The first transcript of “tell me about yourself” is usually ugly, and that is the point.
No score, no login, no recording stored (Google said it did not keep the audio). Low embarrassment.

It never did

Judge whether the answer would pass a real interview.
Know your company, level, or job description.
Push back. Real interviewers ask “what would you do differently?” and “why not X?” Warmup let you re-answer the same prompt.
Cover coding, system design, or LLD. If you are prepping for a software loop, this was only the behavioral / communication layer.

If you only wanted the warmup, you do not need an “AI interview copilot.” You need a microphone and a question list. If you wanted evaluation, you never had it — even when the tool was live.

What to use instead of Google Interview Warmup

Match the replacement to the half of the tool you actually used.

1. You just want to talk out loud (the original warmup)

Use Gemini Live on the Gemini app. That is what Google itself recommends. Brief it once:

You are a hiring manager for [role] at [company]. Ask me one interview question at a time. After I answer, ask one follow-up, then give me three notes: structure, specificity, and what a stronger version would include. Do not praise me. Be direct.

ChatGPT Voice or Claude can do the same loop on a laptop. The briefing matters more than the brand.

If you want zero AI: Voice Memos on your phone. Answer for 90 seconds. Play it back. Read a transcript if your phone offers one. The gap between the answer in your head and the answer on the recording is the whole exercise.

2. You want questions that match a real company

This is the gap Interview Warmup never closed. Generic “data analytics” or “IT support” prompts are not what a Google L5, a Meta E4, or a Stripe onsite will ask.

Use questions people actually reported from recent loops:

Then say the answers out loud. A question bank without the spoken rep is the same as reading a cheatsheet.

3. You are prepping the coding round, not the behavioral one

Interview Warmup was never this. Do not replace it with another talking app.

Practice the problem out loud the way the interview works: restating the prompt, walking the example, naming the brute force, then coding. Mute yourself in a meeting with a friend if you have to. Silence is how people freeze on camera.

4. You want someone to judge the story, not the filler words

Warmup counted job terms. Interviewers remember a scene they can retell.

Write five stories as five lines each: scene, stake, choice, turn, takeaway. Say each one once. Cut anything past two minutes.

A 30-minute warmup you can run this week

This is the Interview Warmup loop, minus the dead website.

Pick five questions from the posting and from recent reports for that company. Include “tell me about yourself,” one conflict story, one failure, one “why this company,” and one role-specific prompt.
Answer each out loud once, standing up, no notes. Phone recording on.
Read the transcript. Circle every sentence that could belong to anyone. Replace it with a name, a number, or a choice you made.
Re-answer only the weak ones. Do not grind all five again. The second take is where the structure appears.
Add one follow-up you did not prepare: “Walk me through the trade-off” or “What would you do differently?” If you cannot answer that, the story is a résumé bullet, not an interview answer.

Thirty minutes. No signup. Same muscle the Google tool was training.
